Vintage Baseball on the Strasburg Rail Road

Play Ball 19th Century Style

Vintage Baseball Comes to Strasburg Rail Road – May 4

America’s favorite pastime is coming to America’s oldest short line railroad - Strasburg Rail Road. The Keystone Base Ball Club of Harrisburg is set to compete against other clubs within the Mid-Atlantic Vintage Base Ball League during a special event on May 4, 2013. Between noon and 4:00 p.m., spectators travel by train to Verdant View Farm along the Strasburg Rail Road line to cheer on history’s grand old game.
The teams competitively re-enact 19th century base ball (two words back in the day), following the rules as they were in 1864.  Wearing long-sleeved, white button-down shirts and trousers, the teams take to the field without gloves, catcher’s masks or batting helmets.  While competitive in nature, the game promotes camaraderie, exercise and pure love of the sport.

Trains will depart hourly from the historic East Strasburg Station with an exclusive stop at Verdant View Farm during the return trip. Passengers wishing to watch the game will stroll through a small stretch of farmland to the ball field.  Tickets for the game are as follows: Adults (ages 12+) $5.00 plus train ticket, children (3 – 11) $3.00 plus train ticket.

Tournament Schedule:
Elkton Eclipse vs. Harrisburg Keystones @ Noon
Flemington Neshanock vs. Philadelphia Athletic @Noon
Consolation Game @ 2:00 p.m.
Championship Game @ 3:00 p.m.

Summer is the time for kids to get up, get out and grow. But for some kids, exposure to activities that stimulate the body and mind ends with the school year. On April 27, the Y will celebrate Healthy Kids Day, our national initiative to improve the health and well-being of kids.

Over 1,900 Ys across the country are taking part in Healthy Kids Day, holding free community events that are open to all kids and families and filled with fun, active play and educational opportunities. Arden Children’s Theatre presents Pinocchio

Arden Children’s Theatre presents
Pinocchio
April 10 – June 23, 2013 – Extended by popular demand

Arden Theatre Company concludes its 15th year of Arden Children’s Theatre with Pinocchio. Based on the story by Carlo Collodi, this version is written by Greg Banks and directed by Arden Associate Artistic Director Matthew Decker. The play is best enjoyed by families with children ages 5 and older, and will run on the Arden’s Arcadia Stage from April 10-June 23, 2013.

Meet Pinocchio, a wicked wooden boy who trades his schoolbooks for candy and plays hooky at the amusement park. When his father Gepetto is swallowed by a giant whale, Pinocchio has the chance to truly be brave for the first time. Five storytellers bring this tale to life with great physicality and help from the audience’s imagination.

Following every performance of Pinocchio, children participate in a post-show question and answer session with the cast, and then have an opportunity to meet the actors in the lobby. All children also receive a free commemorative show poster to take home.

Pinocchio begins performances on Wednesday, April 10, with previews through April 13. Opening nightis set for 7pm Saturday, April 13, 2013. The run has already been extended due to popular demand, with the final performance now scheduled for Sunday, June 23, 2013. The Adventures of Robin Hood at the Colonial Theatre

The Adventures of Robin Hood
.
Saturday April 13, 2:00 pm

Stop by the Colonial Theatre on Saturday at 2pm to see The Adventures of Robin Hood.

About the film
In this, one of the most colorful (in every sense of the word!) versions of the Robin Hood legend, Flynn creates a memorable portrayal of that most famous of all romantic heroes. The Adventures of Robin Hood has been rightly called one of the greatest adventure films of all time, and Flynn is at his peak: handsome, dashing and athletic. As the Cinema Movie Guide has pointed out, “Flynn is everything that Robin Hood should be, with a wicked sense of humor to boot.” Along with Olivia DeHavilland as the comely Maid Marian, the film features some of Warner Brothers’ finest character actors – Claude Rains, Alan Hale, Eugene Pallette, Patric Knowles, and many other merry men – who create indelible portrayals of the key characters in this well-remembered tale. The color photography won a well-deserved Academy Award, as did the editing and the rousing score by Erich Wolfgang Korngold. And if you think that the sword fight with Basil Rathbone in Captain Blood was amazing, watch their rematch at the climax of this film – it is truly breath-taking!

Rated PG. 102 min.
